Economic development

Sustainable economic development in international development cooperation with partner countries in Africa, Asia and Latin America requires different measures that foster regional and local economic development, improve the business and investment climate and increase the competitiveness of actors within individual value chains. Our training and consultancy measures aim at governments and authorities at national and local level, their international development partners, business associations, service providers and individual enterprises.
Regional and local economic development
In order to foster the competitiveness of regions and its companies, different measures need to be pursued. The aim is to assist local actors in the design and implementation of policies and strategies. Besides the design of policies and strategies, the right mix of instruments needs to be put into place that:
- Creates a business friendly investment climate
- Improves the regional marketing and investment promotion
- Creates a market of professional business development services
- Supports business start-ups and fosters entrepreneurship
- Improves the cooperation between government and the business community
| Services | We assist local governments in the classical topics of investment promotion, start-up support and business development services. Our focus lies on enhancing the capacities of local actors to design the right processes and improve their cooperation and networking skills. We support local stakeholders in improving Public Private Dialogue and moderate policy and strategy development processes. | |
Value chain upgrading
For companies it is their „supply chain", other actors speak of the value chain. Fact is that applying the value chain approach has become fundamental when it comes to fostering the competitiveness of sectors and individual companies.
| Services | Based on a participatory analysis we assist stakeholders of the value chain (companies, farmer groups, service providers) and support institutions (government organisations, business associations, development partners) overcome current weaknesses and make use of market opportunities. Besides providing consulting services (strategy development, upgrading measures) we conduct training courses for development practitioners based on the GIZ ValueLinks approach. Our focus lies on establishing stable trading relations by improving horizontal and vertical business linkages and building Public Private Partnerships. As value chain development projects typically are rather complex, the approach requires systematic project planning and implementation. We also assist upgrading initiatives in that regard. more |

Internationalisation and Match-Making
Thanks to our long term experience in markets of Southeast Asia and Latin America (increasingly also in Africa) we are familiar with local framework conditions and count on a wide network of contacts and partners. We were also involved with several policy advise measures in Germany regarding the promotion of foreign trade. Due to this we have a clear picture of the challenges that especially small and medium enterprises face when entering these new markets.
| Services | We offer German and European companies support in formulating their internationalisation strategy, building up intercultural competences and finding the right partner in the developing or emerging countries. We accompany small and medium enterprises in doing the first steps in these challenging markets. Additionally, we advice companies in applying for contracts of international development agencies (World Bank, regional development banks, United Nations). | |
